PASSING STRATEGY

I recently took the ASCP exam in order to acquire a state license in laboratory science. I’ve written this for folks seeking advice on a passing strategy. If you’re experiencing difficulty understanding the material or are anxious about what the exam entails, i’d like to help.

Who this is for:
Different strategies work for different folks. Some can pass an exam in two weeks, while others may require more than one attempt. I wished to make this strategy comprehensive so I have written this for folks taking the exam with only a rudimentary understanding of laboratory science. You know what an antibody is, but the fella who kept interrupting the professor made it impossible for you to learn anything else. Maybe your Professor exhausted his/her own own knowledge by this point. Perhaps you crammed for every exam in school, learning nothing substantive in the process. You may even be taking the exam after being out of school for several years. Whatever your situation, I’d like you to understand that you will pass this exam, by following a few simple steps.

About the exam:
You need to score 400 points out of 1000 in order to pass. That’s all you need – 400. Easy questions are worth 10 points; moderately difficult ones are worth more; difficult ones can be worth up to 25 points. All you need is 400. How do you know if you’re ready to score 400 on the real exam? Referring to labce.com, if you can score 75% + on subject tests; 65% + on 100 question review mode; or 55% + on computer adaptive testing mode, then you have a good shot at passing the ASCP exam. I’ve heard mentioned that if you’re still getting very difficult questions around #80, the computer is essentially throwing high value questions at you, hoping you can guess correctly and bring your score up to 400. If you’re getting very easy questions repeatedly, then you’ve already passed and the computer just wants you to go away.

Survival Kit (for those who aren’t sure what to get):
This is the survival gear you need. It is essential and comprehensive. I wouldn’t take this exam without the following:
Polansky review cards (THE best resource)
LabCE.com subscription – absolutely essential for questions and learning
Success in Clinical Laboratory Science (Ciulla) – to be used as your reference textbook
Clinical Lab Science Review (Harr) – for questions and learning

How much time do I need to study?
Very subjective. Depending on how hard you work on this, you will need more or less time to prepare. Two to three months is more than adequate if you have an extremely poor understanding of lab science.

Okay fine but what do I DO?!
Take a Labce practice test in 100 question test mode. Don’t look at any resources. Just finish it to see what score you would get. Randomly guess on everything if you need to. It’s Kewl – a blue legged squirrel would score 25% by random guessing so you’ll score around 25-35% if you learned the bare minimum in school. You may be worried about a horrendous score. Don’t be – trust me on this.

Separate your Polansky review cards by subject. Chemistry, Blood Bank, Hematology, Bacteriology and Urinalysis requires 95% of your attention because these subjects comprise 95% of your exam.

Open up the Harr Review book. Examine its organization. Each subject is subdivided further into subtopics (for example, Microbiology is divided into gram positive cocci; gram positive bacilli; anaerobes, enterobacteriaceae, etc). Your cards are organized in a similar manner. Notice that each ~50 question subtest in the review book corresponds to only a handful of review cards.

Each Harr question comes with an excellent explanation. If you don’t know a subject AT ALL, go through the entire individual set of questions for that subtopic – read each explanation – look up the pertinent facts in the few review cards you’re holding in your hands and mark it up. If it’s not there, then tell that fact to @!#*$ off because it’s not important. Do this for every question in that subtopic. By the end of that set of questions, you’ll have learned the entire subtopic and noted what you need to remember on your cards.

Do the above for every subtopic you have difficulties with. It took me 1-2 days per subtopic. Keep in mind that while there are many subtopics, only a few are important for the exam.

After you finish each subtopic (say you finish the enterobacteriacea questions in Harr), do a 50 question subject test in labce, corresponding to the subtopic you just completed (eg. do Bacteriology in labce if you finished enterobacteriacea in Harr: do Hematology in labce if you finished wbc disorders in Harr). Getting a poor score is okay. Most people score around 50%. But every question you get wrong is a new fact you’ve learned and underlined in your cards.

I attempted to do as many of the Labce questions as I could. A classmate did 100 every day – that’s phenomenal. Someone else did 300 every day – that’s wild. I did a thousand in total. Do as many as you can, and learn from every wrong answer. Highlight the facts you learn in your Polansky cards.

By the end of your study period, you’ll notice that only a certain percentage of your Polansky review cards are highlighted with facts you didn’t know. The more you know when you start studying, the less marked up your cards will be. Either way, it’s these highlighted facts that you need to review, ideally every few days.

Additional notes:
Don’t buy the BOC book. The explanations are not helpful. What’s the point of buying an inferior book with thousands of questions when you won’t even get to all the questions in the good review sources listed above (Labce and the book of questions from Harr)? The same goes for textbooks. You don’t need them for this exam.

In my opinion, class notes are utterly useless unless they’re diagrams or tables. Proper understanding requires that you create your own visual aids in between answering questions. Don’t waste time staring at monotonous text or reading the gibberish we tend to jot down in class. Those notes have a place and it rhymes with recycling bin.

Each day, try to recall all of the important information you learned that day. Some will also do this as part of a weekly group meet. I can’t stress enough how important it is to recall the information you’ve learned. If you understand something well and wait 2 weeks to think about it again, you’re liable to forget what you understood so well just a short while ago. Attempt to recall as you’re about to fall asleep every night and it will be fresh in your mind in the morning (an added bonus is that it may knock you out like a light). Therefore, review early in the morning, as well.

Picture the branches of bacteriological charts or certain key antigens in blood bank. If you can’t recall something, look it up immediately! Learning is all about layering knowledge. When you take the time to do several layers (learning, doing questions, drawing charts) your recall will be solid.

Use my high yield charts or make your own. But please know the relevant information!

Good luck!

I took the MT chemistry exam today and did not pass. I have a Masters in Chemistry and work in a Physician Office Lab (drug monitoring). I spent two weeks studying off and on from LaBCe, Harr, and Polanski. Unfortunately I was not prepared, it was too much information and I was not familiar with so many case studies. I do plank taking the exam again but I will definitely study in depth and longer.

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

It sounds like you were able to get a good heads up for the next time. I agree that two weeks sounds like way too little time for a subject test. I’m glad you have a solid plan moving forward. Well wishes on the next time.

    • Kavitha's avatar Kavitha says:

Which exam are u going to take?

    • Kavitha's avatar Kavitha says:

I took M(ASCP), only micro. I can’t give any tips for MLS but the exam will be more tougher than labce practice questions. I think for MLS, micro and blood blank are imp ones.
U will get only few pictures, most of them will be in words. As far as I think they will ask good no of quality control and troubleshooting questions(like if u encounter this…. technologist will have to do this…..) For micro u need to memorize the reactions in TSI, for parasitology- differentiation of eggs.
For 100 questions u get 150 min(2.5hrs) i.e. U have 1.5min for each question. If you think that u don’t know the answer or unsure about that, mark it as ‘for review’, select one option and move to next question. Don’t spend too much time on one question. Once you are done with 100 questions u can come back and review all those that is marked as ‘for review’ or all questions( if time permits).
If u need any help in micro part, let me know.

Good day all, please i will still like to know the difficulty level, one need to achieve b4 the exam,rt nah,am in 5.1-5.6,bt only achieve 5.6 once.my score in the comp.adaptive test has bn 52,only had 56 once.

      • Gab's avatar Gab says:

We are on the same boat. According to the comments here and some of my friends experiences, getting 5.50 difficulty means you have chance on passing the exam. But you must push it to 6.00 higher to surely pass with a score 56 above. In the end, everybody gets a different set of questionnaires on the actual exam. And labce sometimes wont really predict if you would pass or not. They say that don’t rely on labce scores because some people who couldn’t attain a good score on labce (like they only got 45-50 scores) passed the actual exam. And people who got 50-60 sometimes fail. I guess its a matter of luck also. Goodluck to us.

      • Kavitha's avatar Kavitha says:

U cannot rely on labce bcoz in that 5-10% are repetitive. I would suggest you to read and understand the feedback/comments on answers that u see after u submit questions in labce. In that way u can have good knowledge on diff topics and it helps u to eliminate wrong answers in actual exam which increases ur passing chances.
        Good luck!!!

Thank you guys. It wasnt easy. About the antibody ID. I will just tell you what I studied and helped me and hopefully helps you as well. I read the entire section of Blood bank on Polansky quick review cards for MLS, I took 100 question practice tests on Blood bank only on Labce and read the feedback on the questions I got wrong. I took hand written notes on the feedback. I also watched the blood bank guy on youtube on antidody ID and basic blood bank, it was like an hour each video and took good notes on that. I also reviewed my school notes on antibody ID and different antibodies and their characteristics. After doing all that, antibody ID was much much easier. I did the same thing with chemistry, hematology, micro, immunology, urinalysis, and lab operations. So I really recommend watching antibody Id videos, pause the video and really take notes and understand what their doing or looking for. Get the polansky cards, extremely helpful and take labce 100 question MLS Adaptive practice tests and read the feedback on the questions you get wrong! I really think if you do it right and study consistently for at least a month and half, that you will get it. Once you start studying make sure you study consistently until the day of the exam so you dont forget anything. I studied about 2-3 hours a day, 6 days a week for 2 months, that included all MLS material hemo, chem, BB, and micro. If you have any other questions let me know, Good Luck! 🙂

here’s a question.. I just finished school in Dec and I have been mostly studying labce for my exam that is in 3 weeks. I average 50% on practice exams and have an average difficulty level of 4.3 at the moment. I have test anxiety so I am in freak out mode but if worse comes to worst, and the least amount of points for an easy question is 10, from what I understand, if I pass 40 easy 10 point questions… I should pass with 400?

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

I would advise against attempting to gauge your progress as you go through the exam by attempting to calculate your real-time score based on a subjective perception of “easy vs difficult”. If you have anxiety this will surely put you through the roof, GUARANTEEING a lower performance. Put these calculations out of your mind. Prepare as well as you can for the exam and take the exam while being as relaxed as possible. I know relaxation can be very difficult but breathe deeply, picture waves breaking on a tropical beach and continue taking your exam. In the end, I am CERTAIN that you will do better by doing this.

I hate to put this out there but I taken the CLS FIVE times and failed every time. (so embarressing!!) Each time I have failed with in 5-10 points. I have major test anxiety and I really do know my stuff but when it comes to tests I panic. My question to all of you is, has anyone failed this many times and if so what did you do to retake it. Unfortunately I think my only option is take the MLT exam and and later take the CLS again. Has anyone taken the MLT exam? Is it harder/the same as the CLS?
Please, can someone give me some advice!!!
    Thanks!!!

    • Zzyyzx's avatar Zzyyzx says:

That makes me nervous :/ I take mine next week. Are you fresh out of school? I graduated last December

    • Spokanese's avatar Spokanese says:

This makes me nervous also. I take my MLS exam this coming Saturday. I’ve been averaging 50% on the adaptive mode and averaging 5 on difficulty.

As for the MLT exam, I have heard that’s it’s much easier than than the MLS exam because it’s not as comprehensive. From what my instructors have said, using LabCe will be sufficient for the MLT exam. Make sure to read the explanations and understand why you got a question incorrect. Good luck.

      • marwa's avatar marwa says:

As i contacted the ASCP advisor i know that the MLT is the Spanish form for the exam and the CLS is the english one so they are the same depends which language you prefer.

    • Spokanese's avatar Spokanese says:

For the MLT exam, I was told by my instructors and some friends that the practice exams on LabCe would be sufficient because that particular exam isn’t as comprehensive as the MLS exam.

I take the MLS exam this Saturday and now I’m scarred. I’ve been getting 50% on the adaptive mode and an average of 5 on difficulty.

    • LabCe should be more than enough. The MLT exam isn’t as compressive as the MLS exam.

    • Lulu's avatar Lulu says:

      Stephanie,

I’m on the same boat. I failed 3x and taking the MLT. I have super anxiety problems. Has anyone reached out to you? Any advice ?

      • Stephanie's avatar Stephanie says:

The only advise I’ve received is what Spokanese said about the difference between the two exams. I’m going to continue using LabCE and use the Success book this time. In the past I have read the Harr book 2x and I think I just need to switch it up.

first of all thank you wordsology for the help. I need help
I am thinking to take the microbiology(ASCP) , so what is the best resources to study for the exam.
    please advise
    thanks

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

I’ve not taken the micro exam but I do understand that the subject exams are far more involved. I think a microbiology textbook combined with a source of micro questions might be a good start.

  45. Kavitha's avatar Kavitha says:

I don’t have any specific notes. I was reading Koneman- Textbook of Microbiology and also used practice sessions from labce.com and of course high yield microbiology notes from wordsology(chart in wordsology was very helpful). It took me full 3 months to prepare for exam. First of all u need to grab a good micro textbook mentioned in the reading guidelines of ASCP. Start reading and prepare notes/ highlight in textbook as u move on. U need to revise them again before exam.
