I took the MLT ASCP exam today and passed. I failed the test the first time but after listening to reviews I subscribed to labce.com and only studied from the website and notes that I had taken. I work two jobs and studied every night after getting home for a minimum of 2 hours and a minimum of 4-6 hours on the weekends. The first time I took the exam I studied from the BOC book and subscribed to the practice tests that the ASCP had on their website but the problem with the ASCP website practice exams is that they do not give you any explanation. My biggest suggestion to people would be to not get a job until you actually pass the exam and not to over study because you will just confuse yourself.

I took it today and passed, the first time I used the BOC textbook , and I failed , the second time around I studied the labCE questions that you must purchase and I used the purple and yellow textbook clinical lab science review, don’t use anything else

I passed after my second time taking the exam. I still feel like this test can throw any old question at you; despite having studied for 3+ months, I still did not feel 100% confident with most questions. I do want to thank you for creating this website. The high yield charts gave me confidence and reading your Passing Strategy was very worthwhile. Thanks again and good luck to everyone taking it out there!

Question. I paid for the national test (in case if I move), but I failed. I want to retake it again. I live in NY. What do you specifically have to pay again in order to take the test. It’s about to be a year since I took my last test though. Do I have to repay for everything all over again? Thanks.

Hi Nika congrats. I will take ASCP MLT exam in 2 days. Can you give me some tips about the exam. I am really nervous. Thanks

      • Nika's avatar Nika says:

        Thanks donlloyd,
I will tell you that the most important thing is to try not to get overwhelmed. I let my nerves get the best of me the first two times that I took the exam. I was a lot more calm and relaxed this time around as far as the questions go here are a few things you should know about: Aquired B, what A1 lectin is, TSI slant reactions ( I had two questions about this), Entomoeba histolytica, normal volume of sperm, sickle cell electropheresis, sickle cell anemia photos, AFP, LDL, rbc indicies, corrected wbc count, anion gap…(I have had this all three times), Hep B stages of infection, passive immunity, aquired immunity, urine casts and where they are formed, CSF fluid, staph questions, strep questions, veionella- not sure if I spelled it correctly, mycobacterium, nocardia, I had a few BB questions on Bombay, Download all the data from the high yeild notes and look over them they will definitely help.

  10. donlloyd's avatar donlloyd says:

Hi Nika, thanks for the tips although it was late but I really appreciate it. I took the exam on august 25 and I passed. I was nervous at first then when I opened the exam I tried to be calm and understand the questions. Most of them were blood bank and microbiology. We had quite different questions so my advise for future examinees is to know everything.

      • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

You probably won’t be able to take full advantage of all of those resources with only a month of studying. With one month left, your best bet is probably to do AS MANY QUESTIONS AS POSSIBLE. If you already know your material well then one month is enough time. Take labce exams (100 questions every day) and Harr questions (do sections out of the book in areas where you are weak). Good luck.

So I am taking the exam hopefully in two weeks. I have the LabCE and the Harr book. I have been taking regular tests on the Computer Adaptive Testing mode and have been scoring 60-70% with an average difficulty around 7. Is this good? If not, what can I do to improve? Also can anyone tell me what the Microbiology section is like on the exam. Is it similar to the questions on LabCE or should I focus on the notes that are on this exam? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  14. Variant's avatar Variant says:

I hadn’t posted anything previously on the site but I used it more than a few times to prepare for the MLS exam (and passed! Wooooooo!) But as others have done before me, I wanted to share a few things that really proved helpful to me when preparing:

LabCE was a lifesaver! I did every question in the testbank in preparation for it and a good portion of the questions I was asked on the actual exam were similarly worded and/or asked the same things so I wholeheartedly recommend. Comparing my scores with two other classmates that had passed before me, we had all scored around an 82-88 on the MLT exam review mode on our last attempt taking it and around 56-58 on the Computer Adaptive Testing mode with an average difficulty level of 6.7-7.1. As more people in my class take the exam I’ll try to gather some more information and update but consistently this is exactly what all three of us scored and we all passed.

Past LabCE, the only other resource I really used was the Harr book, which was used a LOT in our exams given during the internship portion of the program. I used LabCE’s percentages on each exam to identify my weak spots (for me Chemistry especially) and spent my two or three days going through each question in there making sure I had a better understanding of it.

Lastly, for anyone prospectively taking the exam soon. Take your time studying! I took about a month prior to my exam doing 200-300 questions a day (mostly because of Game Mode, haha) and doubled up on that during the last week or so but I know that doesn’t work for everyone! Try not to wait too long after your program is complete to take it, as it becomes a lot harder to recall some of that info while studying. The High Yield Notes on this website were fantastic for my final review and the Micro flowcharts for the Enterobacteriaceae and Anaerobes helped me a lot, as well as the Chemistry notes. Please don’t hesitate to use all the resources this site has to offer and good luck to any prospective test takers in the near future!

Thanks Wordsology for setting up this site. You have no idea how much of a morale booster it was to hear the success stories of those who had taken their exams and passed, and for those who failed but fought harder to ultimately succeed. It’s not only a great resource, but an incredible morale booster for those students terrified of the big, bad, BOC exam. You’ve done one hell of a service for this community.

  15. Noel's avatar Noel says:

I passed my exam this week, and this website was very helpful. My advice would be that you absolutely need to try and learn normal ranges for things, but on the test sometimes the questions will list the reference range, and sometimes they won’t. Write down all those ranges on your notepad as you go, and it might help you with a later question! I personally did not have questions over the “big” topics like the AMLs or respiratory/metabolic acidosis/alkalosis, but I did have several case studies and pics over basically glomerulonephritis vs nephrotic syndrome and the ABO discrepancies. Also a good number of questions over different things that would cause false positives, negatives, or discrepancies in chemistry. Was surprised by how many questions I had over blood bank storage temps/times and the different hemoglobins (like A1C). Almost like it knew where I was weak and kept throwing those at me.
I couldn’t tell if I was doing very poorly and missing even the easy questions, or if I was already bumped up into the “hard” ones! This test is so hard to prepare for. I had the Success in CLS book, which seems to take the approach of teaching you everything, and I didn’t know the answers to most of the study questions. It went through it once but it is a hard read with long chapters and paragraphs, and I think the Polansky review cards are much better for that. Also very satisfying to toss out the ones you know! Then I had the Bottom Line book, which doesn’t even go into the hard stuff, and is much easier to study and keep your focus. I think if you know it front to back and really understand it you should be OK, but you have to really KNOW it. I think the Harr book was the best representative of how the test questions were actually worded (which can be a little odd and misleading–kind of like what are you really asking here?) and how to reason out the correct answer.

I told the MLT exam today and I passed. I used my notes from 4years ago, the BOC book and mediaLab. I have the 3rd edition Harr book but I did not use it. The BOC book is a good source if you just want to answer questions but mediaLab gives you detailed feedback for every question and it has several different arrangements of questions and categories. My notes also helped because I needed to learn the basics all over again. I was very nervous but the test was not as hard and frustrating as other people say. I studied for 3-4 months while on maternity leave and I passed.

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

MLS by ASCP is the medical laboratory scientist test. It’s the same as medical technologist. If you are an international student you would get an MLS ASCPi certification. I’ve not ever heard of IMT.

Taken the exam twice now and been missing by 9 points on both times. I have encountered more Immunology, Laboratory operations, and blood banking tables than i expected. I have the Harr, Polansky cards, and Labce. I don’t know how else to study and how to get myself back on track with this exam. HELP!!!!

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

This is a very difficult situation. I am sorry it didn’t go well the first two times. My knowledge is limited and I haven’t any really unique advice other than to study hard for understanding and know WHY you get questions wrong when you do questions for practice. Know WHY you get questions right and WHY the wrong answers are wrong. Blood banking tables are essential to know – how to rule out antibodies is straightforward. Those are “gimme” points so please learn them once and know them because they will always be on the exam. Study well and good luck.

    second attempt 386

Took the MLT exam yesterday and PASSED!! I have to tell you that I feel there is absolutely no way I would have passed were it not for your “high yield notes” section…The Coag diagram, Hep B diagram, TSI slants diagram, and the micro flow charts were all nothing short of fabulous and were very helpful resources to use as study material…I really wish they would have taught that Coag diagram in class as that REALLY made sense and was both easy to remember and apply…

  28. Kena's avatar Kena says:

I took the MLT exam 9/30 and passed on My first attempt. I studied My school notés from four yrs ago, the ENTIRE BOC book and Labce. Labce gives more feedback with the questions. BOC book doesnt give alot of feedback but it has some Good questions. the key to passing the exam is knowing how to eliminate wrong answers, basically you have to understand the concept if each subject. In order to pick the correct answer.

  29. Brittany's avatar Brittany says:

I wanted to thank you for your website. I took the MT exam on 10/2 for the first time and I passed!! I studied with the Harr book, LabCE and your website. The high yield notes, especially the microbiology notes, were super helpful.

  30. Kay's avatar Kay says:

Passed my MLT exam on first try! The BOC was a waste of time, do not study from that. Too much information, more than you really need to know. Questions that were on my test were mainly on blood bank. I had a few math questions, micro ( mainly on gram neg rods but nothing on gram pos), some pictures on urine crystals. On chemistry I had questions on spectrophotometer, potentimetry, chromatography, fluorometry, and what test goes in what tube. Heme, case studies and blood pictures. My advice is to just study from your notes, review questions and practice tests from your course and you should be good.

ascp online practice test or lab ce exam simulator ….which one is best for preparation.i wish to buy anyone of this for my last 2 months study…thank you…

    • Shane's avatar Shane says:

I purchased the ASCP online practice tests from http://www.ascp-practice.com website (is this what you are referring to?), and the test questions DO NOT repeat, the questions are extremely difficult, and if you get a question wrong there is no explanation as to what the right answer is. The LabCE exam simulator is definitely worth more for the money. I used LabCE, wordsology, polansky, and The Bottom Line Approach by Jarreau and I just recently passed. The LabCE exam simulator pulls test questions from a HUGE bank, which is great and the questions come with an explanation. That is just my opinion. Good luck!

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

How were your score on labce? Let’s try to figure out what’s wrong.

      • pearl's avatar pearl says:

I usually scored 65% on practice exam and 53% on CAT. I also used my notes to study prior the test date but I did not help. The actual exam was nothing like what I have seen from Labce. I do not if that true or because I was so nervous taking the test. I am practicing everyday for my next try and hopefully will pass.

      • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

You’re correct in that the actual exam is mostly cases – long paragraphs – almost a story. You will determine an answer based on the case. On the other hand, Labce asks questions based on facts. It stands to reason though that if you know you’re facts, you’ll be able to answer the case. The scores you mention are not very excellent. I would aim for closer to 80% on those practice exams and CAT.

  39. Danny Lyons's avatar Danny Lyons says:

Hello all. I just passed my ASCP MLS and wanted to share a few things. First, I would like to say thank you to wordsology for this website, as it proved to be very helpful. As far as studying went, here’s how I did it. I took six days of PTO, and studied about 12 hours a day, five days in a row, and took my exam on day six, which was today. First day I studied blood bank, second chemistry and ua, third hematology, fourth micro, fifth coag and immunology. I didn’t study parasitology, mycology, virology, or lab ops at all. My sources were CLS: A Bottom Line Approach (50%), this website (25%), and the Polansky cards (25%). I did not use LabCe or Harr’s book. I don’t remember most of the questions on my exam, but I will say this – I had 3 questions with ANA florescent slides, and none of my study sources were adequate for those. Know your pre/post hepatic dysfunctions, as I had about 3 or 4 of those. I also had 3 questions about ABO discrepancies, and a couple of DAT questions. Knowing your TSI reactions is also advised. I, like many others, was certain that I had failed the exam, but I didn’t. Hope this helps someone!

      • Fena's avatar Fena says:

Thank you & good luck on your exam. Just keep in mind you only need 40% to pass this exam. you just need to make a best guess. when I started exam I felt I am going to fail it & when i started reviewing it I realised I might pass. I used LabCe Exam Simulator. I used to get between 45% to 55% in labce simulator & I also used Polansky’s cards. Thats all I used. Polansky card page no: 171, 172, 173, 371, 90,101, 116, 88, 89, 84, 290, 291, 292, 293, 295, 324, 325, 384, 385, 448, 457, I had questions from this pages in my exam. many ABO Discrepancy questions from Blood bank were on the exam. Microbiology is also very useful on this wordology site. For Mocrobiology I only studied this Wordology site & Polanosky card page no: 171,172, 173, thats all & I was able to answer all Microbiology questions. I had only one calculation question to calculate Anion Gap. A question I remeber was increase 5HIAA = carcinoid tumor but not sure about answer just look up online.

How I passed I used media lab for the mycology and ANA or antinuclar antibody section and the good old BOC for the rest. I did all the question from blood bank to a little virology on my test yesterday I noticed they bring similar question from the BOC

Question I remembered from my test : what nutrient is incorpriate in anaerobic ager to aid the growth of anaerobes I choses (glycerol and iron). A bacterial with A TSI A/A or acid over acid meaning the organisming is a fertermnt muciod pink on MacConkey nonmotile but indol positive I chose (klebsiella oxcitical). Omg this question right out of the BOC the question ask what are the characteristics of Microcouse is show they were suscepibal to (Furazolidone) to is question 125 from the BOC. The difference between Yersina entrocolitica and peptis and I chose ( motility). And question 235 from the BOC twisted around a blood culture grew a grew a bacterial that was thought to be a contaminate something of the sought and I chose (propionibactterium) and question from the BOC 330 twisted around.A mycobacterial that cause a water contaminat I chose (mycobacterium Gordonae) and it was right. Anther question BOC 313. The same way when stain acid fast bacilli with truant auramine-rhodamine stain potassium Permanganate is used to I chose ( quenching florencent background) and I was right is a quenching agent. Another similar question from the BOC to 304 to 307 why are first morning sputum needed for mycobacteria I chose (because if septum is held overnight the septum is invaded).
For chermistery I remember the following.
Instead of the whole liver panel they ask similar BOC 144, 145 ezyme do u see most in obstrctive jundiace or hepatoculluar obstruction between ALP and ALT and other ezymes I chose ( ALP) question. A caculation question of creatinine clearance question no the formula C=uv/p know that u always divide the total urine by 1440 and this is = to your volum. What you use to measure and instrument that absorb a flurecent light and transmit it at a large wave light I chose (. Flurometer) another question an instrument that. And an ezyme Usero measure choles something I chose (GGT) beause I thougt of alcohol when I saw the word coholes and didn’t see any thing about the lipid test so I went with that. BOC question 311 in the chermistery section the same question to detect barbiturate abuse when analyzing urine specimen I chose ( gas chromatography and mass spectrometry).
I will always post If i remembrer any question but for any one out there who is going to take the ASCP very soon review this and please also make sure you sutied the BOC in and out because that ISO he only book I used and the question are smilare and enven directly from the book as well believe eat that BOC question u will not go wrong.

Im studying from pol. Cards, a bottom line approach, and went through ur high yeild notes and doing 100 labce questions test mode on daily basis with 70-75 score.. but not HARR..
I’m sooo anxious cuz I’ve heard that from the 1st of Jan the American and the international examination will have the same pool of questions however the certification will be issued based on the qualification : ASCPi for international applicants such as me.. what I want to ask, do you think if the exam after this situation will be more difficult or not??!!!!!!!!!.. specially they announced that the name will be changed from MT (ASCPi) to CLS (ASCPi) from starting Jan 2015..
Also the ASCP will add HIPPA, OSHA and CLIA related questions to the exam.. so if any one b4 had similar questions and can feed me back will be thankfull..
    Help meee pleeeeeeeeeeeease..

I have been working as a Med Tech for 2 Years. The field pays crap in all NYC hospitals I make 60k with Overtime and a Night Differential. I would hope that you all go back to school because all the hospitals are trying to find ways to get rid of the profession all together. Let me know if you all have had the same experience.

Interesting that someone else (Janine) just brought up this issue. The profession appears to reward experience (longevity) more than anything else, from what I see. 60K with night differential sounds about right for Brooklyn.

    Hi.
I am taking my exam in a little bit over a month and I am scared to death. I graduated 4 years ago and did not need to take it till now. I use lab.ce everyday and usually get around a 65 to 75. I have made an attempt to use your study guides and strategy but find that I get overwelhmed by the amount of information. Is the questions on lab.ce really like those on the exam? Are my scores high enough to pass? I will keep studying of course but any answers would be helpful. Thanks.

It would be much better if you were getting over 75 in labce. Are you attempting about 100 questions per day? Now is the time to ramp it up and max yourself out on those questions. You can pick up a massive amount of knowledge by getting questions wrong and finding out why.

      • Dottie's avatar Dottie says:

No I do at least 200 or more a day. My average is 70 to 80 this week. I just need to know if the exam is like lab.ce or more difficult. Is the format similar. I am sorry if I sound freaked out but I am. I just want to feel prepared. I am so nervous. It has been a long time since I graduated and I feel like I forgot half of what I learned.

Hey Ahmed, what does it mean if you took the ASCP exam twice and didn’t pass? I have been doing the labce question, reviewing my polansky note cards and the harr book and I’m working full time.

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

I can’t tell you what that means other than that you may not have had an excellent grasp of the majority of the material. Did you feel prepared? Were you doing well on the labce practice?

      • shandrika's avatar shandrika says:

labce exams 50% or 60% on the 100 question MLT practice exam, Ive been using the note cards and the harr book to study also my next exam is January 30th and I’m trying to focus on micro because that is my Achilles heel so wish me luck

    Hello!
can you explain exactly on how to get licensed if you have a different degree. Lets say I have a degree in biology or chemistry. I have tried contacting the people at ASCP but they say they can’t help me choose which path to take. I’m very confused. I have been working in a clinical lab for over 2 years and I would like to take my exam.

    Thank you!

On the official ASCP site I see the following:
Route 1: A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university including courses in biological science, chemistry and mathematics, AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Scientist program within the last five years.
      http://www.ascp.org/certification#tabs-1
This appears to be your background. I would call ASCP and speak to someone while you have that page open in front of you and ask them if you are eligible.
