    thank you for these posts…

  2. Leena's avatar Leena says:

Thanks for all the helpful tips and notes that you have put up in this blog, Sohail. Are you done putting all the High Yield Notes or are there any remaining? How long did it take you to prep for this test? Thanks again for your effort!!

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

Leena, I’ve put up most of the really important notes now. I studied for 1.5 months, studying seriously for at least 5 hours per day on the last month.

      • Leena's avatar Leena says:

I actually went over the entire content of your blog like 5 times already, I have to take the test in 3 weeks time and even though its MLT State test, I am super stressed out!

      • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

Don’t worry! You’ll pass! That’s what I hear people are supposed to say but in actuality worrying is good to an extent b/c it pushes you into high gear. Are you using labce?

    • Leena's avatar Leena says:

No, I am not using Labce. I have bottom line approach by patsy jarreau, BOC 5th edition, polansky and prentice hall.

This website is a god sent. It has been super helpful, especially for Microbiology. I am so glad I found it before taking my ASCP exam this friday. Thanks a lot for posting it. You deserve a medal 🙂

Hey thanks a bunch for this! My exam is in 10 days time…havent had a chance to really study the way i should..any advise?

  5. crystal's avatar crystal says:

I just took my test and passed!! I had a few questions from here. I can give more examples

  6. polarbear's avatar polarbear says:

hi crystal its a holiday!! pls post some questions Thanks!!

  7. benny's avatar benny says:

I took n passed the exam..your site has been helpful..so thank you. I have a question. I thought when they mail your score…it will show you how you did out of 999…but my score is out of 100..is that how its supposed to be? Thanks once again.

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

The ASCP MLS exam result that I received had
column 1: MPS (minimum passing score) which should read 400
column 2: Your Score (a number less than 1000)
column 3: Status (pass or fail)

If it’s not, then maybe they’ve changed things in the last month? Try to get in touch with them if you are uncertain. Good luck.

      • polarbear's avatar polarbear says:

it would still give us the result (pass or fail) after we click the submit?

      • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

well as soon as you complete the exam and submit, it says “pass” or “fail”

      • benny's avatar benny says:

Thanks for replying! I think they changed it a bit;for me, column 1 had MPS, which is 75 and then Column two is your score…which is out of 100. By the way, you’ve done an amazing job with this site, and it’s been a really great help (esp. your micro notes)..so thanks!

      • RN's avatar RN says:

could someone help me? i got my degree since 2 years and plan to sit MLT state license.
i started by ubio (polansky cards) since 1 month and feel like when i change the section, i already forgot the last that i read.it is normal? i am freaking out…….
        help me please.some advices.
        thanks

      • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

I believe it’s common to forget what one memorizes. Are you also doing questions (from Harr or the labce) in conjunction with the Polansky cards? It’s important to do questions in conjunction with the cards. Also try to devote a day to review everything you studied the week before. This way, not enough time passes for you to lose familiarity with what you studied previously. If anyone else has advice for RN, feel free to suggest something..

  8. FM's avatar FM says:

Hi there! I just finished my ASCPi exam, as in i-just-got-home-from-the-testing-center kind of ‘finished’. The first thing I thought of when i saw the word PASS on the screen was “Thank you wordsology! :D”. Everything in your High Yield Notes section was very helpful! especially the Microbiology charts since I have had difficulties in the past connecting all the organisms. and how to differentiate one from the other. I can add to your Actual Q’s page , if you want.

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

Great to hear! Please post anything you can recall – i know people will appreciate it immensely. Congratulations FM

Thanks, Sohail! 🙂 Here are the questions I can remember that were just out-of-the-blue and were not in any patterns mentioned in my “PS” below. Hope it helps. God bless!

        >For ISE measurements, a ____ membrane is used to selectively bind potassium.
        >RIST test detects what?
        >Using compensated polarized light, what is positive (blue) for birefringence?
        Uric Acid or Calcium pyrophosphate?
        >Lab Management questions regarding turn around time and MSDS(?)
        >In an exchange transfusion for cases of Rh HDN, whose blood type (mother or baby or father or just Group O negative red cells) do you transfuse?
        >Safety precautions you have to take when a lab personnel is electrocuted. What to do when he/she is “stuck” to the electric source itself?

PS- Here are the ‘patterned questions’
(questions that were given in a row referring to the same topic)
-I had ALOT of antibody panels
        -Microbiology Enterobacteriaceae identification pictures
(the micro charts on this site were VERY helpful)
-Interpretation of Blood Gas results (NOT “metabolic acidosis/alkalosis”, but what caused it- vomiting, hypokalemia, renal impairment, etc)

How much mycology did you actually see on the exam? ive been hearing things like for example, the exam can start you of by bombarding you with multiple mycology questions,

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

I had one mycology question on my exam. Most likely, you won’t have more than 1 or 2, based on the ASCPs own estimation. On the other hand, a friend of mine did tell me she had 6 or 7. I’d save the mycology studying for the very end if I had time for it.

This site is a wonderful resource and you have done an outstanding job at describing how to organize studying. I am a former science teacher at the high school and college and feel you have it spot on (and it aligns with my learning style)! I am waiting on the books and cards that you recommended to arrive in the mail.

I am taking the ASCP technologist in chemistry exam in a few weeks, which is a different exam but I assume many of the questions are similar, I hope. The break down is a bit different than you have decribed with the greatest emphasis on Lab Operations (20%). Gen Chem, Proteins and enzymes; acid-base, blood gases, and electrolytes; Hormones and vitimans (all 15%); and Toxicology and drugs and instrumentation (both at 10%).

Do you (or anyone) have any advise for me?

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

It looks like you’ve got a good grasp on what’s ahead and I couldn’t really add anything more aside from thank you and good luck!

      • Thanks for your reply. I’m feeling more confident. I recently got the Harr book and the cards as you recommended along with another book. Unfortunately, because of a busy work schedule and recovering from a surgery, I am only now sitting down now – and my test is in less than two weeks. I am very greatful for your guide as I think this strategy is what I need to survive it. I will update afterwards.

I’m international person and graduated from college for many years, so I need to study some basic knowledge for prepareing the test. I don’t have any text books. Do you have any suggestion about youtube videos? If you can give me some links or post some here, it will be very helpful. I really appreciate it.

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

Thanks Merry. Under “Passing Strategy” i’ve listed the best resources I have come across in terms of textbooks and such. I think that’s your best place to start. When it comes to youtube, search out whichever particular topic you need additional guidance in, as there is no comprehensive resource for everything. Good luck.

My take I feel like I was tested on reading comprehension more than my ability to not kill someone, would not be surprised if I got exactly 400. I think I changed a couple that I was on the fence on, problem is I think they were right initially. About 4 questions were related in that I had no idea but after seeing the other question I could deduce the answer to the initial question. Had no full Ab panels but some weird mini panels, some discrepancies (not exactly easy), no cardiac enzymes, no thyroids, maybe one blood gas, one or two fungals (probably missed maybe got lucky). Anywho, study hard and you should do fine. Thanks and good luck.

I was planning to get licensed through AMT rather than ASCP. Do you know if there’s a difference between the AMT exam and the ASCP exam in order to become a MT?

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

Unfortunately, I can’t answer this question well – i’m sorry. From what I have heard though, the ASCP licensure appears to be the one that is required by many employers. On the other hand, there are plenty of hospitals where you can work with just state licensure. If AMT can get you state licensure then it might be worth it. I’d go with the one that is more convenient to your situation. If anyone else has any advice for Paul, feel free to comment.

  19. Paul's avatar Paul says:

Thank you for the response. I had another question.

Which topic did you begin studying first and is there some sort of order we should go about when studying each topic?

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

Paul, I found it best to study subjects based on their percentage representation on the exam. See the ‘basic testing skills’ page to see which subjects are most represented. Thanks for the question.

labce questions – as much as you can manage every day (try to do 100 or more in test mode). The single best way to improve your score in the last week is to do lots and lots of questions in a timed setting. Good luck!

  25. MLS2013's avatar MLS2013 says:

HI WORDSOLOGY, Thank you for sharing all your important notes and giving helpful advices !!! Are the questions on LabCe similar to the actual test? Thanks..

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

Hey there – the questions on labce test the same KNOWLEDGE as the actual exam. However, the actual exam consists of longer questions (they are more like mini cases). This is helpful because if you know 2 or 3 facts that you learned while doing labce questions, you’ll be able to answer the actual questions just fine.

  26. Eliz's avatar Eliz says:

Hi Words. I’ve passed the ASCP MLT with just using the LabCE questions and your notes!

        MLT exam:
For me, the 1st 10 questions were easy. after that, it gets really hard until qn 70+. then the remaining questions were easy like the level 2-4 types on LabCE practices.
There were a handfull (about 10) of questions that were very similar or exactly the same as the ones in LabCE practice.

You know what? That happened to me. I saw “Pass” and quickly closed the screen and felt happy. Then two blocks away on 34th street I started wondering…”But where’s the proof? I am planning to take The MT (ASCP) and MLT. Do you Have any suggestions and how long should I study and what should I study?

  31. Breanne's avatar Breanne says:

This website is AWESOME. Lots of helpful info, especially the micro charts. Micro was my weak area so I spent the MOST time on that subject. I copied the charts in your high yield section and placed them all around my house. On the refrig, on the bathroom mirror, on the microwave, on the wall , doors, etc… Had the charts up for at least a week and looked at them every time I walked by one.

I also used the Polansky cards and labce.com. Every time I got a question wrong on labce.com I would write the answer on the appropriate flashcard or highlight the answer. The week prior to the test I only looked at the flashcards with my writing or highlights. The day before the test I did not do any studying. This is important because you need your mind rested and ready for critical thinking. Seriously!

Apparently if you pass you do not get a score breakdown of the different subject areas, just the raw score. Took the MLT test April 2013.

Good luck everyone. You can do it.

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

That’s it – that’s the best and easiest way to do it. Thank you so much Breanne b/c that is a fittingly succinct explanation of a straight forward strategy. . That is the strategy I used: memorize a little, layer, layer, and fill in the holes.

  32. newmt's avatar newmt says:

    Hi there!

I used your website over the past two months to prepare for the ASCP MLS exam. I took my exam this morning and passed! I just wanted to say thanks to you for putting this site together. It allowed me to organize a study plan that worked.

To those who are preparing to take the exam, study his micro charts! They include everything you need to know to make it through the micro questions on the exam.

Questions I saw on the exam today (July 2013): abnormal PT and APTT results, ANA patterns, RIST vs. RAST, lots and lots of micro biochemical reactions, several antibody panels, abnormal cells on peripheral slides and hematology values, many questions over liver enzymes and bilirubin metabolism, a few over the thalassemias, a couple of parasitology and mycology questions, one question over education objectives, one protein electrophoresis, corrected WBC calculation (nRBC), two dilution calculations

    Materials I used to study:
LabCE: I was scoring between 51-55% on computer adaptive setting, 78-80% on the MT 100 question practice exam, and 75-80% on subject tests
Clinical Lab Science Review: A Bottom Line Approach by Patsy Jarreau
    Polansky notecards
    Wordsology
YouTube videos ( especially over the thalassemias and bilirubin metabolism and associated diseases)

I used this website to organize my study plan. I studied for a little less than two months for a few hours per day. The week before the test, I reviewed the main four subjects and studied several hours per day.

Hope this helps! Good luck. 🙂

Thanks again for this website!!!!

  35. CG's avatar CG says:

Hi I took the test today and passed. I have to say it was very hard and like others have mentioned I was pretty sure I had failed around question 50. MY questions certainly didn’t get any easier at the end! There were about 20 I was certain of the answers, kind of straight fact questions. MANY seemed to be the same as John (from March 2013) mentioned above. READ them very very carefully and make sure you know exactly what they are asking. AND some were so vague! I got the one about the unit being “entered” on the floor. Literally the question was ” A unit of blood was issued at 11:15a. After being entered on the floor it was returned at 11:40a. What do you do with the unit?” I am with John-entered into WHAT-the med record? the unit entered?–which now seems like the most logical-but many questions were like that. Minimal information, and what seems to be the correct answer not being there. My favorite (!) was this one: “A med tech sets up QC on new TSI slants using E.coli and P.mirabilis. The results were as follows: E.coli: alkaline slant, acid butt, H2S. P.mirabilis: alkaline slant, acid butt. The answers were: 1. accept QC; 2. Run 2 H2S negative organisms; 3. Run ATCC strain of E. coli, 4. Reincubate. WELL I am a micro tech and first of all most ecoli is not H2S positive, and P. mirablis is H2S positive. And why wouldn’t you have run an ATCC strain in the first place? So the results are screwy to begin with. But out of those choices–What the ????. I picked 2, but who knows!? Looking back I think if you REALLY learn what is on the Polansky cards, and the Clinical Lab Science Review: A Bottom Line Approach by Patsy Jarreau, you will be good. I CANNOT emphasis enough learning bilirubin stuff–urine and blood results for prehepatic, hepatic, post hepatic biliribin and urobilinogen -lots of questions–know the references ranges for total, direct, indirect, conjugated, unconjugated, urine, and blood, know what diseases that elevated values match up to. Maybe because micro is easier for me there seemed to be less of that on there. It seemed like mostly blood banking, chemistry, and hematology. Weird hematology pictures-got the same pictures twice with 2 completely different sets of questions. Know the stains! The only math I had was indices-not just knowing how to calculate them, but using the calculations to diagnose, and a manual RBC count. A few small cell panels. I was really surprised by how minimal and vague some of the questions were. “A known alcoholic comes to the ER. He has cardiac symptoms. His glucose is 180. What test do you run next?” choices; HgBA1C, magnesium, alcohol, glucose tolerance. OMG!! Most of the urine questions were about discrepant dipstick results. A couple mycobacterium questions. I did see the “pass” on the screen but I was so unnerved by the test and shaking, I had to sit in my car for awhile before leaving :-). Learning the facts will help you make good choices-I did alot of questions from the LabCE subscription which helped me some–but this is not straight question memorization like finals in school can be. Reading the explanation and learning that kind of information is much more helpful. I cannot imagine taking this test without spending 3-4 weeks of studying every day. The high yield notes and the advice Sohail gives here are right on target. Thanks so much for this website Sohail-you don’t sugarcoat the test and give alot of good info! Cheers!

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

wow CG – great review of the exam. I felt like I just took it over again! It really is like this folks. That advice CG mentioned concerning doing questions and understanding the explanations is what works for this exam.
With regards to the “unit being entered on the floor”, that refers to a unit of blood being pierced for transfusion to a patient. Even if they do not use the unit and return it, that unit must be discarded as it is no longer considered a closed system. Microbes from the environment/patient may have entered the unit so it’s no good. The time of return is also significant. If the unit was returned NOT having been entered, it can be accepted back into the blood bank as long as it has been less than 30 minutes (in other words, if a unit of RBCs is left at room temperature for more than 30 minutes, it can no longer be issued to a patient. It must be discarded).

I just took the ascp exam and failed for the second time. I am at an absolute lost on how I failed again and what to do next. I found this site after failing it the first time. Decided to do everything suggested here. I studied the polansky review cards, used labce and was scoring 53% in CAT mode, 75%+ on 100 question subject tests, 70%+ on 100 question review mode. I also used Harr’s book to study. I did this all for the last 2 months. I figured I took around 100 tests on labce. I felt very confident going into the test this morning. Even felt very confident while taking the test. Even noticed very easy questions coming around #80 and thought this was a good sign I passed. Submitted my test and the word Failed came across. I just don’t know what to do now and how I can study differently for this test. I definitely need some words of advise and some encouragement, please!

    • Scott Bates's avatar Scott Bates says:

Jo, keep the chin up and head held high! I know many people discard the BOC book as being useful, but from what I can see, MANY of the questions in the exam ARE in the book. Even the one above from a poster about the ATCC strain of E. coli is VERY familiar to me, I just can’t see it right now (as was the blood bank Q).

I’d say go through the BOC questions, 1 by 1, and see if that helps.

But before you take it, no matter what, feel that you’ve prepared as best you can. Don’t rush, crush, condense, just study at your leisure and when you’re ready, go for it!

Of course I remember you – I’m glad you’re going to be taking the ASCP soon! Thanks very much for the great words and good luck (you don’t need it)!

I took the ASCP today and failed I didn’t study so well in Blood Bank and it seemed like when I missed one question they pounded me with it. My test was about 85% BB it seemed like. I just came across your website so I am going to take advantage of it. I am using LabCe to study and a bottom line approach as well. Would you recommend anything else?

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

Get the Polansky cards for high yield information. Don’t be discouraged. When you have difficulty with a subject it can seem like they are pounding you with questions of that stripe. The test was obviously not 85% BB but it demonstrates that BB is a subject for you to focus on especially this time around.

I have taken the ASCP 3 times. I keep failing and I don’t know why. I haven’t even told my husband yet. It’s embarrassing. I stumbled across this website because I am so tired of this, it’s ridiculous. I got the bottom line approach, Harr, BOC, and text books. At this point I feel like I’m giving my money away. Any suggestions?

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

what were your results on the breakdown? Any particular subjects where you did badly? When you take labce practice tests, what score do you get on the 100 question test and the 100 question adaptive testing mode? How about the subject tests? Clearly, there is something the matter and it’s probably something we can figure out and fix.

      • Suzy Boo Hoo's avatar Suzy Boo Hoo says:

I did not use labce this time around. I only had a week(long story). The first time I used the free version and I missed passing by 5 points. I have considered getting labce and the ascp practise test so I can be familiar with the language. The questions are so weird and vague I have to keep reading the question to figure out what they are asking me.

      • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

I would really recommend that you do many practice questions and exams. Do them in labce online and do them in the Harr review book. Your problem appears to be a fundamental problem of comprehending the meaning of the questions. When you see questions like these repeatedly, it won’t appear so vague any longer. You MUST do questions and do hundreds upon hundreds before the subject becomes familiar. I feel like you may be getting bogged down in studying for this “exam”. You’re not studying for an exam – you’re studying for a career with more openings than one can imagine, in any locale in the US and beyond. You’re studying for independence and the ability to get up and go. You can absolutely do it – no question about that.

      • Suzy Boo Hoo's avatar Suzy Boo Hoo says:

OK I got my scores, 379. Close. I did fail to mention that I got sick on this test. I should have said something but I did’nt. I bought the polansky cards and I will purchase labce. You hit the nail on the head, I cannot comprehend the questions being asked. I was considering also getting the ascp practice test. what do you think?I am currently taking online classes with labce since its free. They have excellent blood bank classes. I forgot to mention that my test is on ASCP BB(blood bank) I have already applied for the test again. I plan to go down fighting if it comes to that. But I think I can lick this thing. I am more motivated than ever now. Now they’ve awaken the ” BEAST “. You are really great for this website and all the advice you give. If I had to do one thing over it would have been finding you 3 years ago.

      • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

In my opinion you’ve got the right ideas and you’re absolutely on the right track. If comprehending the questions was a problem, you’re best bet is to get some ascp practice tests and practice with those. I know you can pass and it’s only a matter of puting the work in at this point. You’ll be so well versed in the subject that you’ll pass even if you are sick!

Hello, Thank you for the website and all the great tools on here. I was hoping to see if anyone had any test insight on the Limited CLS License in Microbiology Exam you can obtain in CA. I will be taking it soon and really do not know what to expect or know how in depth the exam will be. Do you or anyone have any information on this particular exam?

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

I don’t but perhaps another visitor does?

      • Josy's avatar Josy says:

Hello, Im planning to take the ascp exam soon and am studying from the BOC 5th edition study guide along with the ascp online practice tests from the ascp website…should I also do the labce or is your site here enough??

      • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

my site is nothing compared to labce – labce is an excellent resource and doing questions on the computer is going to give you a feel for the real thing – plus it’s not as boring as questions on paper.

  44. joy's avatar joy says:

if id only have one reviewer, what would you suggest?

  45. Josy's avatar Josy says:

Im taking the MLS exam…are you recommending the labce 80 courses package or the pick your courses package up to 8 CE hours? I really want to pass the MLS ascp exam

  46. Bj's avatar Bj says:

Is polansky and harrs useful for the MLt ASCP?

  47. Julie's avatar Julie says:

it says the exam stimulator is a collection of 3,000 questions for $55…but when I purchased it…I only see the 100 question tests..where is the 3,000 questions????

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

There is a pool of 3000 questions from which your 100-question exams are drawn. This way you can keep taking 100 question exams for a while before you start seeing repeats.

  48. Ian's avatar Ian says:

So I took the ASCP exam and failed. However I kept on getting tons of micro and blood bank questions. Very few chemistry and just a little coag. However when I was in review mode I didn’t notice that I ran out of time. Once I saw I was out of time I finally hit the submit button. Not submitting by the end of time, would this give my score a big fat zero? *sigh*

If so would it atleast be saved by the ASCP do you think and I can pay ASCP the 25$ fee to review my exam?

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

That’s really unfortunate if you failed for not submitting on time. I’m very sorry to hear this. If you can, it will be worth it to review your exam just for next time.

  49. Nick's avatar Nick says:

Thanks a lots for wordsology’s high yield notices. I passed MT(ASCPi) with feeling that I would have doen at least 90% correct answers but turned out the score of 600. Lots of molecular diagnostics questions. Now my questions is how can I use the certifcate to find a job. I have been working as resaerch associate in the states more that 10 years with first 5 years on hemaology research lab and the 6 years on molecular biology lab.I want to go back the clinical diagnostics lab in the hospitals. Do your guys have any suggestions? I am in MA.
    Thanks!
    Nick

    • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

I think it ought to be easy enough for you. You have a great background and there are lots of job openings everywhere. You’ll need to apply for a MA state license. Easiest thing to do after that is to find a recruiter or post on jobs sites.

      • Nick's avatar Nick says:

Thanks for the suggestion,Sohail. However, the situation does not appear that optimal as I have experienced. Do you think I should do volunteer job for several months? Or just people do not like hiring ASCPi?

      • wordsology's avatar wordsology says:

If you feel that will get you a full time job where you’d like, I suppose you could do that. There are lots of openings – at least in cities.

Hi, I never took a clinical hematology course, I have a BS in Biology and three years experience working in a clinical lab, so I am eligible to sit for the test Hematology ASCP exam. I am so overwhelmed because I am basically trying to teach myself all this material. Would you recommend taking hematology courses on Labce ?
