With regards to #16, you would run a western blot for HIV-2. The positive ELISA tells you the pt has either HIV 1 or 2. To confirm and determine which one, you need to run a western blot which is more specific. The Western blot for HIV 1 was negative so run one for HIV 2.
With regards to #27, the answer is ‘hyaline casts’. Fiber strands from diapers may appear in urine and sometimes be mistaken for hyaline casts.

Took the test today and Passed! I got some of the same questions. I got #14 and one similar to 15. Mine was that enzyme controls were 3 standard deviations below the mean and non enzyme samples were only 2 SD below. I answered temperature of machine too low (enzyme activity is dependent on temperature and increases when temps increase).I also got 16 (or one very similar), 23 and 25. Lots of Coag questions but most were not disease states, they had to do with with QC/troubleshooting or contaminated specimens. I had many (8 or more) of QC troubleshooting on different analyzers (coagulation, blood gas analyzer and spectrophotometer).
The materials I used were: this site, Harr book, Bottom Line approach, Polansky cards and LabCe

The question is asking about the ANTIGENIC makeup of the patients red cells – not their antibodies. The fact that the patients serum reacts with c antigen does tell you that the patient has anti-c antibody circulating in their blood. Therefore, the patient must not have c antigen on their red cells. In addition, it is clear that the patient is not producing antibodies against K. Unfortunately, this does not tell you whether the patient does or does not have K antigen on their red cells.
This is a tricky question Patrick and i’m really happy that you tried to answer it here because it’s going to help a lot of people. Actually, the answer is supposed to be D) do an HIV-2 Western Blot, and i’ll explain why.
You are PRETTY SURE that the person has EITHER HIV-1 or HIV-2 b/c the combination ELISA test tells you so. This is a cheap, catch-all test so it’s run first. However, this test can give you false positives and you don’t want to go around telling someone they have this disease unless you’re sure they have it.
Thus, a more expensive, time consuming and sure confirmation for the ELISA test is a Western Blot. This test is specific so it can differentiate btwn HIV-1 and HIV-2. Since the Western Blot for HIV-1 came back as inconclusive, there’s a good chance that when you run the Western Blot for HIV-2 it will come back positive. Thus, you would run an HIV-2 western blot. I hope that helps.
I think one needs to really read the questions carefully. I had a questions similar to #16 but it wasn’t a combined ELISA. It was two screening tests that were positive then the Western Blot was negative. I can’t remember all the choices ( CD4 count and HIV-2 were NOT possibilities) but the only one that made sense to me was to rerun the Western Blot.
Just a caution for those who have not taken the test that questions they get may have very subtle differences in questions and to not automatically assume the questions are identical.

3 weeks out – absolutely do 50-100 chemistry questions every day on labce. Look at the explanations and understand the “why” or “why not” for each answer. Refer to Polansky cards as a reference if you need to do so but answer these questions on your own once you’re 2 weeks out. It’s very important to make mistakes and learn from them. Good luck hou
My thought process for question 22 was that to confirm the presence of Syphilis you would use TP-PA, whereas VDRL is used more for screening/or monitoring of treatment?
Also, one other question I had was in regards to number 1. I am struggling between answer b and d. Could you please explain to me the rationale behind this.
One other thing. How do you feel the scores of Labce correlate with the actual ASCP exam. For example, what scores should you be getting before heading in to take the exam.

yes! Know the basic Levy-Jennings charts. Come to think of it, i’m pretty sure I had one on my exam. It’s super basic though – only a few kinds of common errors that you ought to be aware of. Good luck
I am pretty certain it’s a hyaline cast – I say this because I remember someone actually teaching me this – diaper strands, for example, look like hyaline casts under the microscope. If you have found a reputable source that says otherwise, do refer me to it.

Hello wordsology! Took the ASCP MLS exam and passed!!!! Good luck to everyone studying in the future. Here are my own personal tips of things to focus on.
Hematology/Coag: Make sure you definitely understand coagulation and interpreting problems related to it (reagents used in PT, aPTT, know what other tests would mean i.e. TT, bleeding time), know inhibitors and how to correlate lab data. Know everything mentioned on this site for Hemo.
Blood Bank sample problems similar to those seen on my exam:
1. A patient has anti-K. You need 8 units of blood. How many units would you need to screen? (It did not provide antigen frequencies so get a good idea of some of these in order to solve the problem).
2. Mother: O, Rh = Antibody screen was negative
Baby: A, pos Dat: 2+
What antibodies would be found on the babies cells?
• Anti-A,B
• Anti-D
• Anti-E
***Additionally, know when to perform elutions and resolve issues with type and screens.***
Chemistry/UA: Unconjugated prehepatic v hepatic jaundice v conjugated hepatic jaundice etc. Everything about bilirubin! Know how to correlate UA microscopic with chemistry and identify discrepancies.
Definitely know sensitivity v specificity and be able to solve if given data for these. Anyway, good luck folks!

Unfortunately I did not pass. I was surprised no glucose related questions/diabetes questions. No sensitivity or specificity question, no acid/base questions. I wouldve killed for half of the questions here. I was getting 54% on LabCe adaptive test and 80% on the MT exam. Im guessing it was just bad luck of the draw. I had a bunch micro, and quite a few mycology and paristology.
It really is luck of the draw. If you had so many questions from mycology then you had a more difficult exam in my opinion. I’m not certain if 54% on the adaptive mode is great though – over 60% is probably more indicative of a decent grasp of the material.
Yeah I got some higher in the 60’s but my early tests were low 50’s, but for some reason I always got the same repetitive questions for level 9, Immunoassay for monitoring drug therapy and another one so when I got higher scores I really didnt think much of it because I knew the questions. I also got a lot of spectrophotometer questions on my ASCP test. No formulas which I thought was odd, I forgot a non programmable calculator, but didnt matter. Either way your notes did help a lot. The coagulation diagram is so easy to remember with the little tips. Hopefully i beef up my parasites and mycology and should be ok.

I have taken the MLT exam twice and failed both times! I am very discouraged at this point. I have studied the Bottom Line Approach book, the Polansky review cards, and labce. I do not know what else to do to prepare myself for this exam. The questions they ask are so confusing! Anyone have any ideas to help?

the Labce website it did it for me, I passed my exam 2 weeks ago and studied Labce, and the ‘Bottom line ‘Book, also used the Harr lab review book Labce is worth it, it lets you keep track of your progresss and to study your problem areas, I did a 100 exam everyday for the last week or so leading up my exam and use the bottom line book to give me fun little ways of rembering things. The Harr review is good for giving you the answers in good detail , the correct one, as well as, why the others are wrong…..
O, and what i did when I took my exam, the computer will let you review your answer at the end of the exam, and change a answer if you choos, I suggest not to,, in my case, I went with my first answer .. Good Luck
I just got my results and only failed by 8 points. I know I changed about 8 answers that I know now were originally right. My best advice is stick with your gut. You spent 4-5 years doing the schooling, have confidence in yourself. I let the whole process freak me out and second guessed myself. I graduated Magna Cum Laude so I dont know why I didnt trust my first instinct.
I hope there was more info on #12 that was forgotten. From those results it would be either k. oxytoca or E. coli, but not enough to tell in my opinion. They both appear mucoid from what I remember and both are A/A with gas on TSI and both indole positive.
E.Coli while pink usually isn’t described as mucoid in most cases. The answer is definitely K. oxytoca. The question was hoping you could tell the difference between different species of Klebsiella in which case oxytoca is indole positive.
Anyway I’m taking my ASCP for MLS tomorrow morning. I hope I’m ready.

Hi! Q#27 Diaper fibers closely resemble waxy casts which can be differentiated with polarized light, diaper fibers are birefringent and will polarize light, but waxy casts will not. Reference: Urinalysis and Body Fluids (Karen Munson Ringsrud, Jean Jorgenson Linne) page 140 & 168. This book is what we currently use in our lab.
I will be taking my MLS ASCP 2 December, I have been studying almost everyday. I have been taking the LABCE CAT for MT and keep scoring in the 50%. Are there any tips on raising it to 70% to minimize the anxiety.

2. cocaine metabolite? Benzoylogoanine
3. choosing positive and negative reagents for panel? heterogeneous for positive and homogenous for negative
4. sample for rota virus? stool, blood, …
5. hair perforation test? differentiation between T.mentogr… & T.rubrum
6. some picture showing the inappropriate dye or basic and acidic dye effects
7. picture demonstrating agglutination and asking the cause.
8. tumor markers? pancreatic cancer? CA19-9, CEA, …
I think Success and Polanski were enough to pass the test, I studied these 2 and some chapters of Harr and Labce and Passed the test on first attempt.

I followed ur advice, use labce n was getting avg of 70, use medical lab review forth edition n momerized all ur high yield notes, studies from few text like urinalysis and body fluids fifth edition by Susan king, a beginners guide to blood cells second edition byBarbara Bain and atlas of medical helminthology and protozoology by P.L.Chiondini. I was reading my textbooks and some class notes only and they didn’t help me out. I am working as full Med Tech in the Hospital which I did my clinical rotation, However I must pass the exam to maintain my full time job.

I also got a lot of spectrophotometer questions on my ASCP test. No formulas which I thought was odd, I forgot a non programmable calculator, but didnt matter. Either way your notes did help a lot. The coagulation diagram is so easy to remember with the little tips. Hopefully i beef up my parasites and mycology and should be ok.
I just took the MLT test and did not pass either. About 75% of the questions were micro and bloodbank, well it seemed like it anyway.

I have taken the MLT exam twice and failed both times! I am very discouraged at this point. I have studied the Bottom Line Approach book, the Polansky review cards, and labce. I do not know what else to do to prepare myself for this exam. The questions they ask are so confusing! Anyone have any ideas to help?

the Labce website it did it for me, I passed my exam 2 weeks ago and studied Labce, and the ‘Bottom line ‘Book, also used the Harr lab review book Labce is worth it, it lets you keep track of your progresss and to study your problem areas, I did a 100 exam everyday for the last week or so leading up my exam and use the bottom line book to give me fun little ways of rembering things. The Harr review is good for giving you the answers in good detail , the correct one, as well as, why the others are wrong…..
O, and what i did when I took my exam, the computer will let you review your answer at the end of the exam, and change a answer if you choos, I suggest not to,, in my case, I went with my first answer .. Good Luck

When you got your results back did it say your weakness?
I just got my results and only failed by 8 points. I know I changed about 8 answers that I know now were originally right. My best advice is stick with your gut. You spent 4-5 years doing the schooling, have confidence in yourself. I let the whole process freak me out and second guessed myself. I graduated Magna Cum Laude so I dont know why I didnt trust my first instinct.
Hey that’s tough to here. Second guessing can be tough. You’ve almost got it though so just sign up as soon as possible for the next one.

I hope there was more info on #12 that was forgotten. From those results it would be either k. oxytoca or E. coli, but not enough to tell in my opinion. They both appear mucoid from what I remember and both are A/A with gas on TSI and both indole positive.
E.Coli while pink usually isn’t described as mucoid in most cases. The answer is definitely K. oxytoca. The question was hoping you could tell the difference between different species of Klebsiella in which case oxytoca is indole positive.
Anyway I’m taking my ASCP for MLS tomorrow morning. I hope I’m ready.

It really depends on you. I can’t answer that question. I believe if you have a basic foundation then 3 months is definitely enough.

Materials I use just as same as everyone are this site, Harr book, Bottom Line approach, Polansky cards and LabCe. Really need to know the concept instead of memories the questions/answer, they’re all about critical thinking relate question. This is really HARD test ever!!! Good luck everyone and dont give up!

1. procaine assay? NAPA I believe so…
2. cocaine metabolite? Benzoylogoanine
3. choosing positive and negative reagents for panel? heterogeneous for positive and homogenous for negative
4. sample for rota virus? stool, blood, …
5. hair perforation test? differentiation between T.mentogr… & T.rubrum
6. some picture showing the inappropriate dye or basic and acidic dye effects
7. picture demonstrating agglutination and asking the cause.
8. tumor markers? pancreatic cancer? CA19-9, CEA, …
I think Success and Polanski were enough to pass the test, I studied these 2 and some chapters of Harr and Labce and Passed the test on first attempt.

I followed ur advice, use labce n was getting avg of 70, use medical lab review forth edition n momerized all ur high yield notes, studies from few text like urinalysis and body fluids fifth edition by Susan king, a beginners guide to blood cells second edition byBarbara Bain and atlas of medical helminthology and protozoology by P.L.Chiondini. Have them in my kindle n willing to give to anyone that want to. I got d exact question u put here, number I, 2,11,17,19 ,22 n 27, though in few they change figure. Got a lot of question from parathyroid , I was ask what is azotomia n option was uric acid, creatinine n BUN. Surface marker for megakaryocte, Sezary syndrome what cell line it affect. I wish I had checked this website!….I took my first ASCP exam yesterday and the result was “failed”. I admit that I didn’t put my effort to prepare for the exam. I was reading my textbooks and some class notes only and they didn’t help me out. I am working as full Med Tech in the Hospital which I did my clinical rotation, However I must pass the exam to maintain my full time job.
