Hello I took the MLS exam and passed. LabCE is great. BOC is a waste of time. My suggestion is to review, review, review LabCE and your notes.
how are you using LabCE? all im doing is grinding the adaptive tests averaging high 60s low 70s with 6.5~ difficulty. but a lot of the time im getting repeated lvl 9 questions. did you get any recent recalls that were posted here?

I am so grateful to Sohail because this blog is such a big help for me when I took my exam last July. My scheduled exam was last June but because the system of Pearson was down at that time and I was advised to reschedule my exam which is very hassle.
Anyway I’m going to share some points. Try to study Harr questions and also BOC for BB. Some of the questions in the BB actual exam were taken from BOC. Try to focus on A bottomline approach by theriot and also the book of ciulla
-Memorize by heart the high yield notes of Sohail for Enterobacteriaceae and for gram positive cocci and bacilli it can definitely save your life from micro questions.

Many blood bank questions especially DAT but I can hardly remember. Review high yield notes and other questionnaires you have. I used this site for review. Other review materials include Polansky, harr, boc and labce. If you are sure of your answer, don’t hesitate to follow your instincts. I never flagged any question since 2 hrs and 30 mins is quite enough. I finish my exam within an hour. Study hard and pray always for guidance. All the best for all takers. 🙂

Yes l did go through the recalls as is. I also memorized the microb charts in the high yield notes.

Thank you for posting your exam recall questions, I think it’s amazing that you all can remember so much from the exam. This site, you, and all the contributors are a true blessing! I have a comment about calculations involved in determining how much the insulin given would change the serum potassium levels. I have searched this site for the answer, read my clinical chemistry text, I have read the BOC Study guide and I have looked on line. It seem that it is a dosage question. The BOC book does not mention dosage calculations, and neither does my chemistry text, but I did manage to find a calculation on line that tells how to calculate how much 1 unit of insulin would affect the glucose levels (1unit of insulin will decrease blood glucose by 50 mg/dL). I also found that 10 units of insulin will decrease serum potassium by 1 mmol/L. All these numbers are dependent upon the condition of the patient (Insulin Sensitivity Factor-ISF) and the many other important factors that the ASCP exam question does not provide. I am led to believe that it is a question that only requires the BEST answer (obviously). We know that insulin decreases serum potassium so we would choose the answer that is lower than the one given in the original question. If Potassium is 4.2 before insulin is given, it’s gonna be less after insulin is given. No calculation needed.
I’d like to second this observation. This exam will not ask you to answer questions involving difficult calculations. The purpose is to test whether the test taker understands the effect of A on B.

I passed really not bcos i gradated as a medical doctor few years back but bcos of God’s divine and unmerited grace and this amazing website. I was guided thoroughly by comments from many people on this site. I had no textbook so I read polansky flash cards, harr’s review book tho i didn’t finish it bcosIi had less than two months to prepare.I actually knew about the exam in June and got registered for the exam in July.

-I passed my exam this past Monday on my first try. Thanks you so much Sohail! I really appreciate your high yield notes. Micro in particular. I used Bottom Line Approach, LabCE and this website. I admit, I didn’t particularly follow the passing strategy. I’m a recent graduate and I gave myself 1 and ½ months to study. I only started aggressively studying the last two weeks. I wouldn’t recommend that for everyone. Many ABO discrepancies and mother/baby types of questions. Review transfusion reactions. Simple panel questions given.

I had a lot of Blood Bank questions. probably 10-20. Useful sources are: Blood Bank Guy (Youtube), BOC and Harr. Study the ABO discrepancies in BOC. They are very helpful and very similar to the questions in the exam.
Practice Antibody Panels. Once you get the hang of it, it should be easy.
i just took the MLS ASCP exam NOV 9 2017 today and passed on first try!!! i cant thank you enough for this amazing website. i was freaking out during the exam and was so nervous that i almost passed out ……literally !!!!!! use Sucess and LabCE, LabCE is a good practice tool to see if you understand the fundamentals, but the question formats are totally different comparing to the actually exam, for example, LABCE exam gives you the exact values for each test performed and gives hints about whether theres something increased or not so if you understand the fundamental its pretty straight forward and the answer is obvious. but the actual ASCP exam questions are usually one sentenced (very minimal information) and a huge table of results containing relavant and irrevant results, so that could be confusing, so it would consume a lot of your time to figure out those anwsers especially when youre nervous and everything starting not to make sense during the exam and that would be the last thing you want it to happen. i was nervous and i blacked out, so make sure dont get nervous, although ive been trying to convince myself for the pass a few week to not freak out but i didnt work out that well.
Hello, I want to thank you for this website and to everybody for their suggestions. This is a wonderful resource. I presented my test yesterday and I passed, I studied for about a month using this High yield notes, polansky cards (excelent), LabCe (good for practicing) and Harr. BOC is the less useful when you have all the other resources. Definitely learn the microbiology flow charts, learn how to rule out ab in blood bank, and basic calculations for the hemogram. Just passed the MLT BOC yesterday (first try!) and this site helped me narrow down the massive amount of info I acquired from school. I know that the MLT is less difficult than the MLS but it helped me all the same. I seemed to have a lot of micro questions, mostly about NLF’s. One questions was what organisms are VP positive. Most of my chemistry questions were about cardiac markers (what marker appears at 72 hours after an AMI and stays positive for 7 days), renal function (specifically where the filtrate is reabsorbed, the process of filtration, reabsorption, excretion, ect.), and hepatic function (enzymes seen in bone disorders and biliary obstruction). My hematology questions were pretty much all over the place, from what stain is required for a Heinz body to sickle cell electrophoresis. Others were where I was given a set of values and asked to distinguish between aplastic anemia, thalassemia, and iron deficiency anemia. Leukemias and dysplasia disorders are not covered in the MLT exam but obviously you will need to know what that looks like when you start working in a lab no matter what level you are at.
What I wasn’t expecting was how different some of the questions were written. Sometimes it felt like I wasn’t sure what they were asking. They want you to think and apply, not just regurgitate information. LABce was very helpful for narrowing down my weaknesses then I used wordsology to develop. I also go the polansky cards and reviewed them every day.

I’m sorry but those recalls were meant to serve as a guide on which topics appear on the exam. I can’t allow specific questions to be posted as that would be a violation of the exam rules and would decrease the value of the licensure itself. I suggest studying topics which folks mention they saw on the exam. That would help you in case any question from that topic comes up.

I had to take down all the recall questions as they were property of the licensing agency. I feel like following the testing strategy is a near guarantee of passing. I passed and that’s what I used!

Just took my exam for the first time and passed!!! I am SO GRATEFUL for this website.
I studied the Bottom Line Approach book, Polanski cards, LabCE. only took 3 adaptive MLS tests: 60%, 64%, 77%. Honestly, the adaptives are OKAY, but there are too many repeat questions so I would suggest towards the end of your studying (last week or so) to do the “questions I’ve never seen before” options and select all of the subjects and use that. I probably did a total of 1500 questions on LabCE and make sure I did multiple subject tests for Blood bank, Hematology and Chemistry (66% avg).
BOC is not worth the investment, I barely used it. I only studied high yield notes for immunology, serology, urinalysis (and quickly reviewed Bottom Line) Micro (also reviewed bottom line, really only first half tbh). The high yield notes for Micro are a life saver, MEMORIZE the Enterobactericeae chart and Gram pos cocci chart.
My exam was pretty blood bank heavy, only 1 parasitology question, 1-2 serology/immunology, chemistry had zero questions about cardiac markers (very surprising) but most of all of the chemistry questions. Heme was also prevalent. 3 mycology questions, two of which were from here (did not study parasitology or mycology AT ALL, I figured it wasn’t worth the extra time but don’t take that from me bc some people on here did say they had parasitology heavy exams).
Also, all of the reference ranges were given which was surprising. I promise you, if you paid attention in school/clinical rotations and you study with these 3 sources, you WILL pass!

Just took the AMT (MT) exam today and passed.
Due to my surprise there were only 2 calculation questions. (they didn’t provide a calculator).
Lots of blood bank (~50 questions), compatibility testing, discrepancy, blood type- storage conditions, donor conditions.
Lots of urinalysis(~25 questions) – crystals, hepatic and obstruction differences- bili and urobili differences, why would a urine turn black upon standing at RT?
Chem (~60 questions or more) Multiple myeloma, which indices are out of range, which indices don’t sound right compared to the other data…. for example, if RBC is low…. HCT and HB is normal then what could be the reason? cold agglutinin clumping up the RBCs? so what would you do? incubate at 37 and retest?
very little to no micro, molec and anything else really.
little- lab operations…. don’t need to put much time into it….common sense type of questions.
if you have any other questions about the AMT board….please let me know…..they are all equal now since 2018…even california accepts AMT board now… i will be taking the ASCP and AAB as well…..

First I want to thank Sohail for starting this site to help all tech around the world with succeeding in their career path. I passed the MLS ASCP exam two days ago. A little back story on me, Ive been a MLT for 6 1/2 years. I work for a variety of labs from small to large hospitals, I’ve also been a coag/heme supervisor. When I took my MLT exam after I got a job close to 6 mths after graduation I didn’t even study and passed with flying colors. So I decided later on to get a bachelor’s and was offer a full ride academic scholarship for my bachelor’s in social work, I love being a tech, so I did the bachelor’s and the science/work requirements for route 2. I finished about three years into being and MLT and then waited about another year and 1/2 to apply. I didn’t study my first time around and I took it right after working a double. Big mistake, but also didn’t know about this site and felt that with my knowledge working as a tech I’d be ok, I was so wrong. I thought I was ok, but when I pushed end exam it said fail. It was so devastating, but in many ways I deserved what I got with how I handled it, I scored a 384 that time. So I applied again and this time I studied, lab ce with 65% adaptive and around 5 difficulty, aceascp, passascp, polansky cards, and box exam book. I felt good this time but I was also tired because I just got off shift work. This time I was almost sure I passed, but I didn’t. It was the most discouraging feeling. I even scored lower than my first time at a 342. I almost didn’t take it again, but my tech friends and family encouraged me to take it one last time since my work experience was expiring and I would have to go to school to attempt it again if I didn’t try now. So I applied again, this was when I found Sohail website, I printed off everything and studied it like in was my Bible, I also had a friend in MLS school that gave me some of his notes and I read through everyone’s posts on here to gather what I could, I also used two lab review books I got off Amazon. This time i went in I finished the exam in 35 mins, I flagged 16 questions and numbered the ones I wasn’t sure of on the dry erase board at the end I only changed 2. At the end of the exam I waited a while and stared at the screen then finally pushed the end exam button, but closed my eyes for a while because I was scared to look. When I looked it said pass. It was the most amazing feeling to see. So nice to finally feel that level of success from the hard work I put into studying the third time. I just got my score back and passed with a 742. I hope this helps in spirit other techs that are struggling just tell youself you can do it, it just takes a lot of work and studying. Your lab knowledge from just working isn’t enough. Some of it comes from just reading and memorizing. Especially if you don’t work in the areas….I failed the last two everytime because of micro and immunology. Departments I never work in besides when I gained the experience I was required to complete. I’m here if anyone has any questions I can help with. Exam recalls honestly I wish I had some, but I think I was so stressed I am drawing a blank. Quizlet helped me as well. Good luck everyone K❤️

I also did my AMT and got 69–passing is 70.
I have been an MLT for 7 years and thought it was going to be easy although I studied quite a bit. I have Lab CE and probably reviewed 5000 questions so far.
I think my weakest area is blood bank.

Sohail your high yield notes helped me so much. While preparing for the exam I referred to your website often. I passed my ASCP MLT exam today!!! I was scoring 50-51 on the Labce exam simulator, avg difficulty was around 5-6. I only used the boc book and the success in clinical laboratory science review by anna p. Ciula and Donald Lehman. (I loved this book, it was easy to read and navigate)
I will begin studying for the AAB next week and look forward to checking in with this blog again to prepare.
